Former South African leader and Anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, remains hospitalized for the eleventh day in his country, South Africa.
Government
officials said the 94-year-old Mandela underwent a successful surgery for
gallstones on Saturday.
Mandela
has been hospitalized since Dec. 8 for tests and later medical
treatment for a recurrent lung infection.
Doctors "say there is no crisis,
but add that they are in no hurry to send him home yet until they are satisfied
that he has made sufficient progress.
President
Jacob Zuma and delegates at a convention for the African National
Congress political party honored Mandela on Sunday.
Zuma
said in a statement issued by his office. "We urge the public to continue
supporting (Mandela), but at the same time to understand that he is 94 years
old and needs extraordinary care. If he spends more days in hospital, it is
because necessary care is being provided."
Mandela
was a leader of the ANC and served as the nation’s first democratically elected
president under the party’s banner.
He is respected worldwide as the
man of the people for his selfless fight during the apartheid regime in South
Africa.
