OKADA RIDER KILLED BY A POLICE MAN

Lagos motorcyclists, popularly called ‘Okada riders’, yesterday massively protested the alleged killing of their colleague by a policeman at Ilupeju.

The protest took a violent shape when policemen began to fire bullets and teargas to disperse the mounting protesters.
According to an eye witness, the policeman shot the Okada rider after failing to stop the bike on Coker road, Ilupeju.

As the cyclist escaped from being arrested, out of anger, the policeman surprisingly pulled the trigger. The bike man was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was confirmed DEAD. This incident happened at about 10:52am.

Reportedly, after the incident, policemen mobilised to Ilupeju area and started firing bullets and teargas canisters indiscriminately, leading to a stampede and motorists and pedestrians fled to safety.

The identity of the alleged killer is yet unknown as some claimed he came from the nearby police station while others said he was a member of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation and Special Offences Task Force.

However, Policemen and traffic agents have been accused of using brutal methods to enforce the Lagos State Traffic Law, which also bars ‘Okada’ riders from about 475 roads in the metropolis.
This is highly pathetic and disheartening. May God help us in this country…..

  1. The Governor made provision of helmets to the Okada riders during his election campaign and now he is taking even more from them after winning.
